SweNanoSafe Report – background description and workshop on nanomaterials in the construction industry

In May 2019, SweNanoSafe arranged a workshop on the use of nanomaterials in the construction industry – a life cycle perspective. The meeting gathered about 25 representatives from the authorities, businesses, academia and organisations, all of whom in their different ways have knowledge of and an interest in utilising nanomaterials in the construction industry.

The objective of the workshop was to jointly develop a status report for nanomaterials and nanosafety in the construction industry. Therefore the joint activities during the meeting was to identify obstacles, including knowledge gaps, and to discuss the potential for safe development, application and handling of nanomaterials in the construction sector.

The report not only summarizes the outcomes from the workshop but also contains a feasibility study entitled “Possible nationwide initiatives for safe utilisation, handling and development of nanomaterials in construction materials” by Danielle Freilich, completed in 2018 on assignment for SweNanoSafe. Finally, the report presents a number of proposed initiatives to help increase nanosafety in the construction industry.
